Cottong & Taniguchi is a multifaceted landscape architecture, urban design, and land planning firm, located between San Francisco and Silicon Valley in Burlingame, California. At Cottong and Taniguchi, we practice landscape architecture as an artistic means to both conceive and render ideas. Our vocabulary is the familiar toolkit of landscape architecture a fusion of technical, horticultural and engineering skills. Our thinking, however, is what sets us apart. The key is our ability to grasp some primary project element, then elevate it by means of a thematic concept. Articulating the concept may rely on design metaphor, artifacts, symbolism or allegory, but the results always establish an eloquent visual connection with the architecture, its location, or the user environment.
We have always pursued a choreographic balance in Cottong and Taniguchi's landscape design solutions ever since our practice began in 1987. In our view, balance is the very nature of landscape architecture mixing equal parts of design creativity with technical skills. Our project solutions always integrate diverse ideas and elements both traditional and contemporary so that they coexist in a balanced composition. Likewise, our project list reflects balance in its diversity of experience, from large-scale institutional and commercial master planning, to residential, park, recreation and garden design.
